Michael Chiariello
Professor Michael Chiariello
was born in 1945 in Brooklyn, New York.
He received an A.B. (Philosophy) from Manhattan College, and A.M. and
Ph.D. from Boston University (Philosophy). He joined the Department of Philosophy at St. Bonaventure
University in 1970. He has served
as Department Chair, Dean of Clare College, and holds the rank of full
Professor. Since 2006, he has directed St. Bonaventure
University’s Franciscan Heritage Program at the Umbra Institute in Perugia
where is a visiting Professor.
He has published articles
and reviews on ethics, social theory, Franciscan Studies, as well as curriculum
development and program assessment.
His most recent publications include “Bob Dylan’s Truth” in Philosophy
and Bob Dylan (Open Cou rt, 2006) and
“Umberto Eco’s Name of the Rose:
Teaching the Franciscan Intellectual Tradition to Postmodern
Undergraduates” (University of
Syracuse Press, 2009), and “Bonaventure’s Itinerarium in Mentis Deum: A thirteenth century foundation for a twenty-first
century curriculum,” in Chiariello and Brunello, eds., The Wider World of
Core Texts. Association for Core
Texts and Courses, 2004. He is
currently working on a new English edition of Paul Sabatier’s Life of
Francis.
He is former chair of the Seneca
Nation of Indians-City of Salamanca Joint Leasing Commission, and the Board of
Advisors of the San Damiano Foundation.
Currently. he serves on the Board of Directors of the Pax et Bonum
Foundation, and is a member of the St. Bonaventure University Percussion
Ensemble.
He is
married to Judith Sherman Chiariello, a retired school administrator, and they
have a daughter, Emily Jean Chiariello, who is a Mentor/Teacher in the
Washington, DC school system.
